Our number one most asked question - 316 vs 304 stainless steelOur number one most asked question - 316 vs 304 stainless steel

Are you in control of what hardware is installed on the external doors and windows of your latest project? If not, you might want to look into it...

Why it matters

You spend years designing a building. You nurture it from concept to design, technical specification, spatial coordination and construction.

Finally the building is finished and visitors get to experience your dream build for themselves. They approach the entrance, reach the door... and it isn't specified?

It may "only" be a door handle but it's the first opportunity many will have to interact with your project.

If unspecified, the handle may become corroded, rusted, pitted, affecting the look and feel in just a couple of years.

The images on the left feature malleable iron products. You can see the inevitable eruption of rust seeping down the door. This doesn't only affect the aesthetics; it also impacts security and the insulation at the property.

The image on the right shows a project that has been specified with 316 marine grade stainless steel door hardware, finished in antique black to fit with the styling of the property.

But I specified stainless steel on all the external doors and windows

Stainless steel is an alloy of iron; the addition of chromium, nickel, carbon, silicone and manganese contribute to its unique qualities.

But not all stainless steel is created equal.

316 stainless steel also contains molybdenum, which has a superior tensile strength and significantly increases corrosion resistance.

If your project is located in potentially high pollution areas or on the coast, where salty air is constantly attacking the exterior, 304 stainless steel just won't cut it.

When we build, let us think that we build forever. Let it not be for present delight nor for present use alone. Let it be such a work as our descendants will thank us for. - John Ruskin

At Coastal Group we stand by this statement. Our BLU and DURATIQUE products have been designed with this in mind.

Standardise the Exceptional

Call me biased but it's clear to me which handle set below is most aesthetically pleasing - and which one you can be confident is going to last the test of time, even in the harshest environments.

And here is the 316 marine grade stainless steel KM9 handle in situ, on the sliding doors of Watergate Bay Hotel, a luxury resort in Cornwall.
