Compliance
If you supply external doors and windows for projects requiring planning permission, compliance with Part Q is essential. Introduced in 2015, it applies to ground floor and easily accessible openings.
Coastal’s approval scheme removes the cost and complexity of testing, allowing you to manufacture PAS24-compliant products using our pre-approved hardware, without the need for independent certification.
Four easy steps to
Part Q Certification
Step 1
Download or request a Compliance Application Form (CAF) for each product type. Pre-filled forms are available to make getting started quick and straightforward.
Step 2
Submit your completed forms and we’ll register your details on our Part Q database. A set-up fee is payable per product type (renewable after two years).
Step 3
Once payment is received, you’ll be issued with your Cascaded Test Certificate (CTC) and glass stickers, providing clear, visible proof of Part Q compliance.
Step 4
You’re ready to manufacture. Simply retain delivery notes or invoices as traceable evidence that approved components have been used in line with the Compliance Guide.

Part Q Scheme Overview
FAQ
Part Q
From October 2015, Approved Document Q made it mandatory for windows and doorsets to be manufactured to a design that has been shown by test to meet the security requirements of PAS 24:2012
This is a requirement for new dwellings.
It is possible to casade the data for this, assuming that the window/door installed, including all hardware, is identical to that tested.
Document Q only requires testing against the Security elements of PAS 24: 2012
Your Client or Project Specification may require a full suite of PAS 24: 2012 Testing, including those elements as required by BS 6375 Parts 1, 2 & 3.
Part 1: Classification for weathertightness and guidance on selection and specification.
Part 2: Classification for operation and strength characteristics and guidance on selection and specification.
Part 3:Classification for additional performance characteristics and guidance on selection and specification.
Secured by Design is a voluntary initiative run by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO). It requires a fabricator to demonstrate that they can produce windows and doors that comply with the requirements of PAS 24, BS 6375-1, BS 6375-2 and BS6375-3. It also requires the involvement of a Certification Body to certify the product, part of which involves a Factory Production Control audit. Once certified, the fabricator can then apply to SBD to become a member.
- Requires ITT (which may be cascaded)
- Requires annual testing (covering complete range over 3 year cycle)
- Required annual FPC audits
Approved Document Q: Security - Dwellings
Approved Document Q gives practical guidance about how to meet the security requirements of the Building Regulations 2010 for England.
Approved document Q of the Building Regulations 2010 was published in March 2015 and took effect from 1st October 2015. It does not apply to work started before 1st October 2015, or to work subject to a building notice, full plans application or initial notice submitted before that date provided the work is started on site before 1st October 2016.
By 1st October 2016 all accessible doors and windows supplied to new build properties need to be proven to be secure by testing to PAS 24:2012 or other means.
Approved Document Q gives compliance with the Building Regulations for building work carried out in England. It applies to dwellings that are new or formed by a material change of use.
Approved Document Q applies to 'easily accessible' doors and windows that provide access into the dwelling from outside, access into parts of the building containing flats from outside (i.e. communal entrance doors), or access into a flat from common parts of the building (i.e. flat entrance doors).
Easily accessible doors are those that are within 2 metres vertically of an accessible level surface. Easily accessible windows are those that are within 2 metres vertically of a flat or slopping roof (up to 30 degrees) within 3.4 metres of ground level.
Secure doorsets and window tested to PAS 24:2012 will meet the requirements. Any doorset that is partof a Secured by Design approved third party accreditation scheme to PAS 24 or STS202 BR2 will also meet the requirements.
Main doors for dwellings should have means of seeing callers such as clear glass, a door viewer or a window next to the door. The door should be fitted with a door chain or door limiter.
The people responsible for building work must ensure that the work complies with the Building Regulations.
