How to fix Loose Door Handles: A Joiners Fast fix guide

There’s nothing worse than a handle that doesn’t feel quite right. Whatever the quality of the handle and however well fitted, over time it can loosen, leading to call backs or unhappy customers.

Whether fitting new ironmongery or revisiting an older install, it’s usually something simple that can be fixed with a bit of TLC.

Here’s a fast fix guide to help you troubleshoot and sort any handle issues.

1. Check the handle fixings

Make sure all handle fixings such as screws are tight, and the handle is secure on the door. Tighten any loose fixings as this can create issues with other elements of the handle and lock.

2. Check the handle grub screw

Make sure the grub screw in the handle is tight against the spindle. If it’s not properly tightened on to the flat side of the spindle, the handle will feel loose no matter what.

If the spindle is dish cut, make sure the cut is aligned with the grub screw.

Top Tip: Use a quality Allen key to tighten the screw - but don’t overdo it or you will risk rounding off the screw head.

3. Check the Spindle length

If the spindle’s been cut too short, it might not engage fully with the opposite handle or the lock mechanism, which can lead to the handle dropping.

If you cut the spindle down, make sure equal amounts are removed from either side to allow the correct engagement with the cut.

Quick Fix: If the spindle is too short, you can order a replacement from us if needed.

4. Check the spring cassette

Make sure the spring cassette is installed correctly. If it’s been installed upside down, the handle won’t return properly and can feel weak or loose.

Quick Fix: If the spring cassette is worn, you can order a replacement for any of Coastal’s dual sprung lever handles.

5. Check the lock gearbox

If the handle has no spring mechanisms, check that the gearbox on the lock isn’t broken.

A worn or broken gearbox can cause the handle to drop or feel wobbly over time.

Hopefully taking some simple steps to maintain your lever handle will keep it working perfectly for a lifetime.
