Door manufacturers spend a lot of time improving the u-values of their front entrance doors, and ensuring they’re weatherproof and draughtproof. With this in mind we recommend you take a moment to ensure the letterplate you fit doesn’t ruin your door’s performance.
The Difference Between the LP400 Sleeved Letter Plate and a Standard Letter Plate and Tidy
The LP400 Letter Plate is a sleeved letter plate with front and back plate joined with a telescopic sleeve. A standard letter plate fits to the external face of the door and the letter tidy is bought separately and fits to the internal face of the door.
Which is the best value for money?
The letter plate and letter plate tidy combination tend to be cheaper, but they also tend to leak, rattle and let the draughts in - not something anyone wants after going to the expense of producing a high performing door.
The LP400 Sleeved Letter Plate on the other hand is a more expensive option but there are many good reasons for that. When we consider the overall performance of this letter plate and how long it will last, the LP400 represents extremely good value for money.
Why the LP400 Sleeved Letter Plate is More Expensive to Buy but the Best Value?
The standard letter plate and letter plate tidy shown is made from brass, the LP400 on the other hand is made from 316 Marine Grade Stainless Steel – the best material to withstand corrosion. This means the LP400 letter plate will last much longer and won’t need replaced.
Which Letter Plate or Tidy is Best for Air, Wind and Water Protection?
The standard letter plate and letter tidy has no weathersealing around it prevent wind and rain coming through. It isn’t sprung which means it cannot resist the wind and tends to rattle in the slightest breeze. It just fits to the external and internal faces of the door with no liner in between.
The LP400 Letter Plate is fitted with a high performance gasket and brushes to seal against any draughts or rain. The flap is also highly sprung to prevent it from rattling in the wind. The telescopic liner joins the external and internal faces together, providing additional draught protection and creates a very neat and tidy finish.
The LP400 achieved ‘best in class’ results for protection from air, wind and water in the BS6375-1 Weather Test.
Which is Best for Security?
The internal letter plate tidy can be pushed wide open whereas the LP400 is fitted with an internal security flap to help prevent a ‘fishing’ attack and has been successfully used in a PAS24 test.
